LUX ELEMENTS®-FOAM is a very high-quality, blue coloured, expanded polystyrene hard foam with high density that is produced using an environment-friendly technique without CFC, HCFC, HFC or a CO2 foaming agent. LUX ELEMENTS®-FOAM is the most important basic product for LUX ELEMENTS® hard foam support elements.
As opposed to panels containing wood or gypsum, the core of hard foam elements consists of humidity-resistant polystyrene. The manufacturing process differs here between extruded (XPS) and expanded (EPS) polystyrene. While XPS is mainly foamed with CO2, EPS is the most environmentally-friendly material, as it is produced without the foaming agents CFC, HCFC, HFC or CO2. This hard foam is then coated on both sides with a special mortar coating, thus forming an ideal mineral subsurface for usual covering materials used in damp rooms, such as tiles. For increased rigidity values a glass-fibre fabric is additionally embedded in the mortar coating.
Hard foam support elements have been available on the market for almost 25 years, and this material is extremely popular in the tiling industry. First intended as a “simple“ partition element and building plate, it soon developed into a designing multi-talent. In particular, the most versatile shapes can be directly cut from large-volume blocks of expanded foam. For example, a snail shower or circular shower can thus be created from few segments, which must then only be assembled, glued and reinforced at the element joints on site.

Biological characteristics
LUX ELEMENTS® -FOAM does not provide a breeding ground for micro-organisms. It does not go rotten or mouldy. FOAM is neither harmful to the environment nor hazardous to water.
The safety of FOAM for both indoor and outdoor applications is made most obvious by the fact that the same raw-material is used to make food packaging. See the German Health Ministry's Recommendation V "Polystyrene" here.
